Material Information
Sandstone Description:
Sandstone is a sedimentary rock that is primarily composed of sand-sized mineral particles or rock fragments. It is formed when loose grains of sand are deposited and bonded together by natural mineral agents such as silica, calcite, or iron oxide. Sandstone can be formed in a variety of environments including beaches, deserts, and riverbeds. The process of sandstone formation begins with the weathering of rocks, which causes the formation of sand particles. These sand particles are transported by wind or water and are deposited in a low-energy environment such as a riverbed or a beach. Over time, the sand grains become compacted and the mineral cementing agents fill the spaces between them, resulting in the solidification of the sand into a rock.
Sawn sandstone is sandstone that has been cut and shaped using a saw. It is a popular choice for paving material due to its durability and aesthetic appeal. Sawn sandstone is good as a paving material because it has a high compressive strength, which means it can withstand heavy foot traffic and weight without cracking or breaking. In addition, sawn sandstone comes in a variety of colours which allows for a range of design possibilities.
Sawn sandstone paving is available in a range of different textures, often relying on secondary processing to achieve these finishes. These include:
Smooth or Honed Sawn Sandstone - Honed sandstone paving is a type of sandstone that has firstly been sawn flat and then been smoothed or honed to create a flat, even surface. The honing process involves grinding the surface of the sandstone with abrasive tools to remove any rough spots or unevenness. This results in a smooth to the touch finish which is ideally suited to modern and contemporary style gardens. This finish is usually combined with a calibrated thickness of stone where the paving is cut to an relatively even thickness to ease laying. Sawn and honed sandstone paving will often have sawn straight edges to the slabs as well, although this is not always the case, so refer the the product description for more details on the edge finish of each paving product.
Sandblasted or Shotblasted Sawn Sandstone - Sandblasted or shotblasted sawn sandstone is a type of sandstone that has firstly been sawn flat and then treated with high-pressure sand or shotblasting to create a stipple textured and slip resistant surface. This process involves shooting tiny abrasive particles, such as sand or steel shots, at the surface of the sawn sandstone under high pressure. This action roughens the surface of the sandstone and creates a textured finish that provides a high level of slip resistance. In addition to its practical benefits, sandblasted or shotblasted sawn sandstone also has a unique and attractive appearance. The textured surface creates a striking visual effect that enhances the natural beauty of the stone. This finish of sawn sandstone is usually produced with a calibrated thickness stone where the variation in the thickness of the slab is kept to a minimum to ease laying. Sandblasted and shotblasted sawn sandstone sandstone paving will often have sawn straight edges to the slabs as well, although this is not always the case, so refer the the product description for more details on the edge finish of each paving product.
Flamed Sawn Sandstone - Flamed sawn sandstone paving is a type of sandstone that has firstly been sawn flat and then subjected to high temperatures using a tool similar to a flame-thrower to create a unique water-weathered appearance and slip resistant surface. The process of producing flamed sawn sandstone involves exposing the surface of the stone to high heat, which causes the grains to expand and crack. The surface is then rapidly cooled with water, which causes the outer layer and softer minerals of the stone to flake off, creating a very natural looking weathered finish with occasional gentle ripples. This paving is ideally suited to contemporary styled designs, however would work equally well where a softer, riven surface is desired. This paving is generally calibrated in thickness and therefore, considered easier to lay. It will often have sawn edges, however read the product description for full details.
Tumbled Sawn Sandstone - This sandstone has been sawn and then tumbled to give it a weathered and aged appearance. The process of tumbling sawn sandstone involves placing the stone in a tumbler machine and then rotating it with water and small stones to wear down the surface and edges of the stone. This results in a natural-looking finish that is softer and more rounded than the sharp edges of sawn sandstone. This process sometimes causes imperfections along the edges, but overall gives a softer appearance. Tumbled sawn sandstone is a popular choice for outdoor paving projects due to its rustic and charming appearance. Whilst the stone is still flat and clean cut, the tumbling process gives the impression that the stone has been in place for a long time, and can provide an attractive contrast to more modern architectural styles. Sawn sandstone is usually created at a calibrated, even thickness making it easier to lay. The edges will usually be sawn, prior to tumbling, but refer to the product details for a full description of the product.
Sandstone Colours:
Sandstone paving offers a palette of breathtaking hues, like nature's own colour chart, making it a popular choice for outdoor landscaping and paving projects. With sawn sandstone products, the colours often appear subtle and blended and with textured finishes such as sandblasted and shotblasted stone, the subtle variations on each paving slab become less noticeable. The ranges comprise of a selection of core colours combined with subtle contrasting shades, and the balance of shades can vary between batches of even the same stone due to different seams in the stone quarry occurring over time. The colour intensity increases when the paving is wet. Most brands offer the same range of colours with slightly different names. BE AWARE that not ALL natural stone is the same quality. Over 50% of stone sold on many other websites may not conform to British Standards and could crack during cold weather.
The main colours options with sandstone are known as the following names and include these predominant shades:
Buff | Harvest | Camel | Sunset Buff | Sunrise | Country Buff - has honey buff colours with occasional pink and brown-grey tones. Warm neutral tones.
Raj Green | York Green | Lakeland | Forest Glen - a mix of grey-green, beige and occasional lilac and ideal for a cool neutral colour scheme. Popular for use on older properties as well as more modern homes.
Fossil Mint | Mint | Ivory | Golden Sand - this colour range has light cream colours with warm pink and occasional brown. It may include occasionl fossil imprints and bronze markings although the general appearance is a bright cream.
Kandla Grey | Promenade | Grey - a popular choice of light dove grey with very occasional buff and fairly consistent in tone. Works well with most property styles and colours.
Autumn Brown | Brown Multi - darker shades of brown and warm grey with occasional maroon tones. Creates a warm and inviting atmosphere especially where a darker colouring is required.
Modak | Modak Rose | Heather | Buff Pink - warm rich apricot and duky pink tones becoming rich plum and beige when wet. Ideal as a brighter option and superb for mediterranean styles.
Sagar Black | Graphite | Monsoon | Raven | Twilight - a mix of graphite and charcoal tones interspersed with warm buff tones. A classic colour that works well in older style properties. Generally more costly than other sandstone colours.
Raveena | Ravina | Rufina - this is one of the more vibrant shades of sandstone with rich purple colours combined with silver grey and buff tones. Exhibits rich colours when wet.
Indian York | Yorkshire Blend | Glendale | Old York - this sandstone has a contrasting colour palette of light dove grey and golden buff and has a banded appearance. It offers a good, economically priced alternative to British Yorkstone.
Natural Stone Characteristics:
All natural stone products are unique and will vary in colour and texture, often showing distinctive markings, minor imperfections and may include mineral deposits such as iron and quartzite. Edges may be handcut or sawn and may include slight irregularities such as chips and blemishes either from the manufacturing process or as part of the natural make up of the stone. Sizes are nominal and may vary and there may be dimensional tolerances affecting size and thickness in accordance with British Standards. Some paving manufacturers include the pointing allowance in the individual slab sizes whereas others include the pointing allowance in the overall pack coverage. The product images shown are as accurate as photographic processes allow and may appear differently in accordance with lighting conditions and screen calibration in addition to the natural variation occurring between batches. Images may not be a true representation of a particular product size, use or laying pattern. Descriptions provided offer a combination of the manufacturer's and our own opinion of the product's characteristics and features.
